    Converting between yards and bags

    A bag of concrete is sold by the weight of dry mix inside it, but a pour is measured by the space it has to fill. The number that joins the two is the bag yield: the volume of wet concrete one bag produces once water is added. Yield is printed on the sack and it is not proportional to weight, which is why doubling the bag weight does not halve the bag count.

    Worked example: one cubic yard

    1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet 27 ÷ 0.60 = 45 bags of 80 lb 27 ÷ 0.45 = 60 bags of 60 lb 27 ÷ 0.375 = 72 bags of 50 lb 27 ÷ 0.30 = 90 bags of 40 lb

    Reversed, 45 sacks of 80 lb give you 27 cubic feet back — one yard exactly. That reverse figure carries no waste allowance, because the sacks already in your vehicle are a fixed quantity. Padding them would tell you that you can fill more space than you actually can.

    Why the allowance only applies one way

    Waste is a purchasing decision, not a property of the material. When you are working out what to buy, an allowance protects you against a short load. When you are working out what a stack of sacks will place, you want the honest figure — the pour will consume whatever it consumes, and a padded number would leave you short at the far end of the form.

    Common mistakes

    • Treating weight as volume. Two 40 lb sacks do not equal one 80 lb sack. Two 40s yield 0.60 ft³ and one 80 yields 0.60 ft³ — that pair happens to match, but 60 lb sacks break the pattern entirely.
    • Trusting a rounded "45 bags per yard" for every size. That number belongs to the 80 lb sack only.
    • Buying to the exact figure. Merchants sell whole sacks and a split sack is a wasted sack, so the count always climbs to the next whole one.
    • Ignoring what 45 sacks weigh. A cubic yard in 80 lb sacks is 3,600 lb of dead lift, well past what most cars will legally carry in one trip.

    When these numbers do not apply

    • Specialist mixes. Fast-setting, fibre and post mixes publish their own yields, sometimes lower than standard mix at the same sack weight.
    • Sacks that have been stored badly. Mix that has taken moisture on a damp floor yields less and gains lumps that will not break down.
    • Volumetric or ready-mix deliveries. Those are sold by the yard directly, so no conversion is involved. They are also denser than bag mix — about 150 lb/ft³ against roughly 140 — so do not carry a weight from this page onto a delivery docket.

    Common questions

    I am in the UK, Canada or Australia. Does this work in metric?

    Yes, and the shopping list changes with it rather than just the arithmetic. Switch to metric and the answer comes in cubic metres and the bags become 20 kg and 30 kg — the sizes those merchants actually stock. It used to convert the volume and leave the packaging American, which gave you the right amount of concrete in a bag nobody near you sells. Yields are the published ones: Blue Circle put a 20 kg bag at about 0.01 m3, and Sakrete Canada put a 30 kg bag at about 0.014 m3. Prices can be entered in GBP, EUR, CAD or AUD.

    How many bags of concrete are in a cubic yard?

    Forty-five 80 lb sacks, sixty 60 lb sacks, seventy-two 50 lb sacks or ninety 40 lb sacks. Those are exact divisions of 27 cubic feet by each published yield, before any allowance.

    Does the allowance change the reverse direction?

    No. Going from bags to volume, the tool reports exactly what those sacks will place. Only the volume-to-bags direction adds an allowance, because only that direction is a purchasing decision.

    Which sack size is best value?

    Compare price per cubic foot, not per sack: divide shelf price by yield. Larger sacks win on price and lose on handling.

    Can I mix sack sizes on one pour?

    Yes, provided they are the same product. Keep the water ratio right for each sack rather than eyeballing a combined batch, or you will get colour banding and inconsistent strength.

    At what point should I stop buying sacks?

    Around a cubic yard the labour starts to dominate. Forty-five sacks is several hours of mixing and 3,600 lb of lifting, and a ready-mix load or a volumetric truck will usually beat it on both cost and finish quality. Enter your bag price and a ready-mix price per yard above and this will work out which is actually cheaper for your pour rather than leaving you with a rule of thumb.

    Is ready-mix cheaper than bags?

    Per cubic yard, almost always. For your particular pour, often not — and the reason is the delivery minimum rather than the price. Plants bill a minimum load whether you use it or not, commonly one to three yards, so a pour of one yard against a three yard minimum is billed as three. That is why this calculator asks for the minimum separately: it is the number that decides small jobs, and it is the number every other calculator leaves out.

    What is a short load fee?

    A surcharge some plants add on top of the minimum when you order less than a full truck. It varies enormously by supplier and region, so nothing is assumed here — the calculator flags when you are under the minimum and tells you the truck is billing more than you need, but any short-load surcharge is on top of the figure shown. Ask the plant for it when you get the quote.

    Bag yield is approximate and varies with aggregate and water content. Density 140 lb/ft3 is the ASTM C138 unit weight of mixed bagged concrete, about 3,780 lb/yd3, and is what every calculation here uses. Ready-mix delivered by truck is denser, about 150 lb/ft3 or 4,050 lb/yd3; that figure is stored separately as readyMixDensity and appears only where a page discusses ordering ready-mix. The two are not interchangeable. The 90 lb bag is regionally stocked rather than nationally, so it is flagged and listed last. Bag sizes are per market: the 40 to 90 lb bags are what North American merchants stock, and the 20 and 30 kg bags are what the UK, Canadian and Australian ones do. Switching the calculator to metric switches the shopping list with it, because a metric answer priced in pounds of product is not an answer anyone can buy. The 150 lb/ft3 ready-mix figure was carried for a long time as a point value with nothing behind it. NRMCA CIP 36 publishes it as the TOP of a range — normalweight concrete is 140 to 150 lb/ft3, and structural lightweight is 90 to 115 — so densityRanges now holds both and the weight calculator reports a span rather than a single number it cannot justify. Where one figure has to be picked, the top of the range is the safe end: over-stating a weight risks specifying too much truck, and under-stating it risks overloading one.

    Unit conversions are exact by definition and need no source.

    How we choose and cite these figures

    Bags or a truck?

    Once a pour is past a yard or so the question stops being how many bags and starts being whether to order any.
