A pallet is a stack of pieces, not a round number
Sod is priced and delivered by the pallet, and a pallet holds whole
pieces — so the coverage lands on whatever number the stack comes to. A
slab pallet sold as 500 square feet actually holds
503. One sold as 400 holds 399, and one sold as 450
holds 452. This page reports both, because one is what the invoice says
and the other is what is on the driveway.

Three cuts, three different products
"A pallet of sod" is not one thing. A slab covers 2.66 square feet, a
mini hand roll covers 5, and a large roll covers 10 — so the same lawn is
790 pieces one way and 420 another. Slabs are usual in
the southern US and rolls in the north, and large rolls are laid by
machine rather than by hand. The cut you can get is usually decided by
what your local farm grows and harvests.

Five per cent, and more if the lawn has edges
Every curve, tree ring, path and bed means a piece cut to fit, and the
offcut is rarely the shape the next gap needs. Five per cent covers a
rectangular lawn. A narrow strip round a patio, or a lawn that is mostly
border, wastes considerably more — and nothing published quantifies it,
which is why the field starts at five and is yours to change.
It is a crop, not a building material
Sod is cut, stacked and delivered within a day or two, and a stacked
pallet starts to heat from the moment it is loaded. Order it for a day
you can lay it, lay it the day it arrives, and water it in as you go
rather than at the end. This is the one material on this site with a
shelf life measured in hours.
The ground under it decides everything
Cleared, graded, loosened, raked to a fine tilth, with imported topsoil
in place and settled before the first piece goes down. Sod laid on
compacted or unprepared ground roots badly, dries at the seams and never
knits. No quantity on this page improves that, and getting the count
right matters far less than getting the bed right.

How much sod do I need?
Measure the lawn, add a little for cuts and curves, and divide by what one piece covers. Two thousand square feet at 5 per cent waste is 2100 square feet to cover, which is 790 slabs at 2.66 square feet each, or 5 pallets. In mini rolls the same lawn is 420 rolls, because a roll covers 5 square feet rather than 2.66.
How many square feet are in a pallet of sod?
It depends on the cut, and the honest answer has two numbers. Slab pallets are sold as 400, 450 and 500 square feet and actually hold 399, 452 and 503, because a pallet is a whole number of slabs rather than a round area. Why is a 500 square foot pallet not 500 square feet?
Because it is stacked in slabs. A 16 by 24 inch slab covers 2.66 square feet, and 189 of them is 503 — so the pallet is sold under a round name and delivers a few square feet more. On a five pallet order that is 15 square feet of sod you were not billed for, which is small but real and worth knowing before you order the last pallet.

Not long. It is a living crop that was cut, stacked and loaded within a day or two of delivery, and a stacked pallet starts to heat — faster in summer, faster still if it sits in the sun. Order it for a day you can actually lay it, and water it in as you go rather than waiting until the whole lawn is down. Sod that yellows on the pallet may recover; sod that composts on the pallet does not.

Probably not exactly, and it is worth asking. Pallet coverage varies between growers because of shipping weight and height limits, harvesting equipment, moisture, grass type and soil type — the source cited here says so directly. Use this page to understand what you are buying and to get a close order, then confirm the pallet size when you call. A pallet size that is 50 square feet different changes the count on a big lawn.
