Measuring a room that is not a rectangle

Square footage is length times width, and that answer is right for perhaps half the rooms anyone actually measures. The rest have a bay, a chimney breast, a return into a hallway, or an island in the middle. The way out is not a cleverer formula — it is to stop treating the room as one shape and start treating it as several.

  • add — a part of the floor: the main room, the return, the bay
  • subtract — something standing on it: a chimney breast, an island, a stair box
  • 9 — square feet in a square yard, if your supplier quotes in yards

Worked example: an L-shaped room with an island

Add 20 × 14 ft main room = 280 sq ft Add 10 × 8 ft return = 80 sq ft Subtract 6 × 4 ft island = −24 sq ft Total = 336 sq ft

Split the L at the inside corner and you get two clean rectangles. The island comes back off because nobody floors underneath it. Measured as one big rectangle the same room reads 20 by 22, or 440 square feet — a hundred square feet of flooring you would have paid for and never laid.

Why subtracting matters more than adding

Over-measuring is expensive in one direction only, and it is the direction people default to. Adding a shape you forgot costs you a second trip. Failing to subtract an island, a hearth or a fitted unit costs you material that sits in the garage forever. Anything permanently standing on the floor should come out of the figure, and anything you would still floor under — a freestanding table, a rug — should not.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring the outside of the room. Wall thickness is not floor. Measure skirting to skirting.
  • Double-counting the overlap. When you split an L, the two rectangles must meet at the corner, not overlap through it. Measure the second one from the inside corner.
  • Rounding every dimension up as you go. Small roundings compound across four shapes. Enter what you measured and let the material calculator add its own allowance.
  • Subtracting a doorway. Thresholds and door swings are still floor. Only things standing on the floor come out.

When these numbers do not apply

  • Genuinely curved walls. A circle handles a round room or a turret, but a sweeping bay is neither rectangle nor circle and is best measured as a series of narrow strips.
  • Sloping ceilings. Floor area is unaffected, but the wall area for painting or boarding is not, and this tool measures floor.
  • Stairs and split levels. Each level is measured separately; a stair opening is subtracted from the floor it passes through.
  • Land and roof areas. Both are usually quoted on the flat plan rather than the sloped surface, which is a different figure again.

Common questions

How do I calculate the square footage of an L-shaped room?

Split it into two rectangles at the inside corner, measure each, and add them. A 20 by 14 main room with a 10 by 8 return comes to 360 square feet before anything is taken back out.

Should I measure in feet or inches?

Feet with a decimal is easiest: eleven feet six inches is 11.5. Mixing feet and inches within one measurement is where most arithmetic slips happen.

Do I subtract kitchen units?

For flooring, yes if they are fitted and staying — you will not floor underneath them. For painting or a rough estimate, most people leave them in, because floor gets replaced more often than kitchens do.

How do I handle a bay window?

A square bay is another rectangle. An angled one is close enough to a rectangle at the depth of the deepest point for most material orders, which errs slightly high and covers the cuts.

What is square footage in square yards?

Divide by nine. Carpet is still quoted per square yard in many places, and the ticket shows both so you can read whichever your supplier uses.

Why does each shape show its own subtotal?

So you can check the arithmetic against the room rather than trusting one number. A subtotal that looks wrong is nearly always a measurement typed in feet when it was taken in inches.
