    What a paint calculator has to measure

    Paint is bought by area, not by room, and the area that matters is what a brush actually touches. Walls go round the perimeter, doors and windows come off, and every coat repeats the whole lot. Most disappointing estimates come from skipping one of those three steps.

    Worked example: a 12 by 14 foot room, 8 foot ceiling

    Perimeter = 2 × (12 + 14) = 52 ft Wall area = 52 × 8 = 416 sq ft Paintable = 416 − 20 − (2 × 15) = 366 sq ft Two coats = 732 sq ft Gallons = 732 ÷ 350 = 2.09, so 3 gallons

    Two and a tenth gallons means three tins. There is no way to buy the remaining tenth, and running out with one wall left is the worst possible moment to discover the shop has a different batch.

    Why coverage is a range, and why 350 is the default

    Manufacturers publish 250 to 400 square feet per gallon, and every number in that band is honest — the spread is real, and it is wider than most calculators admit. A sealed, previously painted wall in a similar colour reaches the top of it. Bare plaster, new filler, masonry, heavy texture and any strong colour change fall towards the bottom, and the bottom is a third less paint per tin than the top.

    This calculates at 350, which is realistic for a typical repaint and is the figure you can change. The room below shows why it is worth changing: at 400 it takes two gallons, and at 350 or anywhere below it takes three. One step along the range is a whole extra tin. If your walls are new, porous or textured, move the coverage down before you buy rather than after.

    Common mistakes

    • Forgetting the second coat. It doubles the paint. A single-coat estimate is only right if you are refreshing the same colour.
    • Subtracting the whole window wall. Only the glazed opening comes off, not the wall it sits in.
    • Ignoring the ceiling. On a 12 by 14 room the ceiling is 168 square feet, comfortably another gallon.
    • Forgetting primer entirely. It covers about as much ground as paint — 300 to 400 square feet per gallon — but it is a separate purchase. Enter your primer coats above and it is counted as its own line.

    When these numbers do not apply

    • Textured surfaces. Woodchip, heavy artex and rough render swallow far more than a flat wall of the same area.
    • Dark to light changes. Covering a strong colour with white can take three coats or a tinted primer.
    • Sprayed application. Spraying puts more material on the surface and into the air than a roller does.
    • Woodwork and trim. Skirting, architrave and doors are painted with a different product and are not counted here.

    Before the brush

    Paint goes on last. If the walls are new, the drywall calculator works out sheets, screws, tape and compound, and all of that has to be finished and sanded before any of this is worth calculating. If the room is an awkward shape, take the area from the square footage calculator rather than treating a bay or an alcove as a rectangle.

    Common questions

    Does the ceiling come out of the same tin?

    No, and this calculator no longer pretends it does. Ceiling paint is a different product — flat, usually white, and cheaper — so if you ask for the ceiling it comes back as its own line with its own tin count. That means each is rounded up separately, which is often a gallon more in total, but it is what you actually leave the shop with: you cannot decant the ceiling tin into the walls. Both get the cheapest pack combination worked out on their own.

    How much paint do I need for a 12 by 14 room?

    Three gallons for two coats on the walls, with one door and two windows deducted. Adding the ceiling pushes it to four.

    Why does it round up to a whole gallon?

    Because paint is sold in whole tins. Quarts exist, but colour matching between a gallon and a quart of the same shade is not guaranteed across batches.

    Can I do several rooms at once?

    Yes, and you should — add a room and the calculator treats the whole job as one order. That is worth real money, because paint is bought once and rounded up once. Three rooms each needing 1.4 gallons is 4.2 gallons for the job, which is five tins; calculated separately they would be two tins each and you would buy six. The rooms share a ceiling height, which is fine for one floor of a house and wrong for a room with a vaulted ceiling — do that one on its own.

    Should I subtract built-in furniture?

    Only if it covers wall you will not paint. Most decorators paint behind removable furniture anyway, and fitted units are usually easier to treat as painted wall than to measure around.

    Does ceiling height include the coving?

    Measure floor to ceiling and treat coving as part of the wall. It is a small over-estimate that covers the extra profile you actually paint.

    How much primer do I need?

    About the same square footage per gallon as your paint. Manufacturers publish 300 to 400 square feet per gallon, and that includes the PVA primers formulated specifically for bare uncoated drywall — so the widely repeated idea that primer covers far less than paint does not hold up against the data sheets. This calculator uses 300, the thirsty end of the published range, because no typical value is printed and running out mid-wall leaves a visible line. Enter your primer coats and it appears as its own line on the shopping list.

    Do I need primer at all?

    Often not, which is why the field starts blank. A repaint over a sound, similar-coloured wall in the same sheen does not need it. Bare drywall, raw plaster, heavy patching, a big colour change, and anything glossy you are painting over do. If none of those apply, leave it empty and buy no primer.

    How many coats do I really need?

    Two is standard over an existing similar colour. One suffices for a genuine refresh of the same shade, and three is realistic going light over dark without a tinted primer.

    Coverage is a published range and the default is the value BEHR quotes. Primer carries its own range because it is a different product, but not for the reason commonly repeated: two KILZ data sheets, including the PVA primer formulated specifically for bare uncoated drywall, both publish 300 to 400 sq ft per gallon. That is the same territory as finish paint, not a third less. No typical value is published for primer, so none is stored; calculators take the thirsty end of the range, because a wall you run out of primer on halfway is a wall with a visible line. Door and window deduction areas are BEHR's stated averages and are used by the drywall calculator too, since a door is the same hole whichever trade is working round it.
