from about 18 to 30 square feet depending on plank width, length and
thickness — a spread wide enough that a category average would be wrong
for most products in it. It is printed on the carton. This page asks.

600 ft² at 10% waste from this calculator. The box count swings by a third across a coverage range that is entirely normal, which is why the figure has to come off your carton.
Waste belongs to the room, not the material
Ten per cent covers a straight lay in a square room. A diagonal, a
herringbone, or a floor cut up by doorways, closets, islands and angled
walls all want more — twenty per cent is not unusual, and on the worked
example that is the difference between 28 boxes and 31.
The flooring itself has almost nothing to do with it.
Five small rooms take more than one big one
Each room has its own border of cuts, and the offcut from one rarely fits
the next: the wall lengths differ, and on a plank floor the run has to
carry on in the same direction. Two bedrooms and a hall of the same total
area as one open living space will take more flooring, reliably. The room
count field exists to say so.
Keep the spare
Dye lots and production runs move. A board replaced in three years from a
different batch will not match the floor around it, and by then the
product may not be made at all. The waste allowance usually leaves you
something — store it flat, somewhere dry, and treat it as part of the
floor rather than as leftovers.

- Underlay. On laminate and LVP it is an area comparable to the floor and a separate order.
- Transitions and trim. Sold by the piece and by the doorway — count doorways rather than deriving them.
- Adhesive. Where the product needs it, coverage is on the tub.

Common questions
How many boxes of flooring do I need?
Area plus waste, divided by the coverage printed on the carton. Six hundred square feet at ten per cent waste is 660 square feet to buy, and at 23.8 square feet a box that is 28 boxes — which actually supplies 666.4, leaving 66.4 spare. The box coverage is the number that matters most and it is the one no calculator can know for you.

Wide planks in long lengths come in boxes covering more ground than narrow short ones; a thicker engineered board packs fewer to a carton than a thin laminate. That is exactly why this page asks rather than assuming — the number is printed on the box, and using a category average would be wrong for most of the range.
Should I buy extra?
Yes, and keep it. Dye lots and production runs change, so a plank replaced in three years from a different batch will not match the floor around it. The waste allowance usually leaves you something — on the worked example 66.4 square feet — and that surplus is worth storing flat somewhere dry rather than returning. A single damaged board with no match is a bigger problem than a spare box in the loft.
Does this work for laminate, vinyl and hardwood?
It works for anything sold by the box, which is all three plus engineered wood and LVP. The arithmetic does not care what the material is; what changes is the coverage per box and the waste the pattern demands, and both are inputs here. Carpet is the exception — it comes off a fixed-width roll rather than in boxes, so the layout decides the price and it has its own calculator.
What is not included?
Underlay, transition strips, quarter round or scotia, adhesive, and the trim you take off and put back. On a laminate or LVP job the underlay is a comparable area to the floor itself and is a separate order in its own right. Transitions are sold by the piece and by the doorway, so count doorways rather than trying to derive them.
Do I measure the room or the floor?
The floor you are covering, including under anything that is not fixed and into every closet and doorway the flooring runs through. Do not deduct kitchen islands or built-in cabinets that sit on top of the floor unless you are genuinely stopping the floor at them — and if you are unsure, measure it as covered. Under-measuring a floor is the expensive direction, because the second order is the one that will not match.
